Here's the pattern I see in almost every self-coached rider who's stuck: plenty of training, no structure. Hard days that are never quite hard enough, easy days that are never quite easy, week after week at the same middling load — and then a big jump three weeks before the event because the fitness didn't come. That rider isn't lazy. They're just riding without a shape.
Periodization is that shape. Strip away the jargon and it's a single idea: you can't build fitness and express it at the same time. So you split the year into phases that each do one job — build the engine, sharpen it, then let the fatigue clear so the fitness shows up on the day that matters. Base, build, peak, taper. This is how to actually run it with your own numbers, not as theory.
First, the three numbers this whole thing runs on
If these already mean something to you, skip ahead. If they're fuzzy, everything below depends on them, so thirty seconds:
- CTL (Chronic Training Load) — your fitness, modelled as a ~42-day weighted average of daily TSS. It moves slowly. This is the number periodization is really steering.
- ATL (Acute Training Load) — your fatigue, a ~7-day average of daily TSS. It moves fast: one big block and it spikes; a few easy days and it drops.
- TSB (Training Stress Balance) — form, and simply yesterday's CTL minus yesterday's ATL. Positive means fresh, negative means buried. It's not fitness — it's how much of your fitness you can access today.
Together they're the PMC — the Performance Management Chart. Every phase below is just a deliberate move on those three lines: base and build push CTL up (and TSB down); peak holds CTL while intensity gets race-specific; taper lets ATL fall so TSB climbs into the positive on the one day you care about.

The one rule to carry through everything
You get fitter during recovery, not during the hard session. The session is the stimulus; the adaptation happens while you rest. That single fact is why recovery weeks aren't optional, why ramp rate has a ceiling, and why a taper makes you faster despite doing less. Keep it in mind and the rest is bookkeeping.
Base: build the engine that everything else sits on
Base is where CTL is built and durability is laid down — the aerobic foundation that lets you absorb harder work later without breaking. It's mostly volume: endurance and tempo, a controlled amount of sweet spot, and just enough intensity to keep the top end from going to sleep. The mistake here isn't going too easy; it's making base a grey slog of moderate rides that are too hard to be endurance and too easy to be a stimulus. Keep the easy genuinely easy so you can keep adding volume.
Base is also where CTL climbs the most, because you're coming off your lowest fitness of the year and the body responds fast. That's exactly why the next number matters so much here.
Ramp rate: the single most-abused number in self-coaching
Ramp rate is how fast your CTL rises, in CTL points per week. It's the number that decides whether a build makes you fitter or just injured, sick, or flat. Enthusiasm has no brake; ramp rate is the brake.
A workable guide for most riders training consistently:
- 3–5 CTL/week — the sustainable zone. You can hold this for weeks and actually absorb it.
- 5–8 CTL/week — aggressive. Fine for a short, deliberate block if your sleep, food and life stress are all handled. Not a setting you leave on.
- >8 CTL/week sustained — this is where the injuries, the lingering colds, and the "why am I suddenly slow" weeks come from. The chart went up; the rider fell over.
The trap is that a fast ramp feels productive — CTL is climbing, the line looks great. But CTL doesn't know if you're adapting or digging a hole; it just counts load. The cost of an over-ramp doesn't land the week you do it. It lands three weeks later as a plateau or a bug, right when you can least afford it. Ramp low enough that you'd be a little bored, and you'll almost always come out ahead.

How much TSS per week? Stop asking the forum
The most common question — "how much TSS per week should I do?" — has no universal answer, and every number you read on a forum is somebody else's answer to a different question. The honest answer is anchored to your own CTL, and there's a clean way to see it.
Because CTL is a daily-average model, the weekly TSS that simply holds your current fitness is roughly:
The maintenance line
Weekly TSS to maintain ≈ your CTL × 7. At CTL 60 that's about 420 TSS a week just to stand still. To build, you have to average more than that — the size of the gap above the line is what sets your ramp rate. Ride below it (a recovery week, a taper) and CTL falls, on purpose.
So the sequence is: read your current CTL, multiply by 7 to find the line that holds it, then add a deliberate amount on top to hit a 3–5 CTL/week ramp. As CTL rises through the season, that maintenance line rises with it — the same weekly TSS that was a hard build in January is barely maintenance by May. That's not a plateau; it's the whole point. Fitness is expensive to keep, which is why you can't hold peak load forever, and why the calendar has phases at all.
Recovery weeks: the ones almost everyone skips
This is the part that gets cut first and matters most. The pattern that works is 3:1 — three progressively harder weeks, then one recovery week — or 2:1 if you're older, newer, or life is heavy. The recovery week isn't a reward for surviving; it's the week the previous three actually turn into fitness.
What a real recovery week looks like:
- Drop weekly TSS by ~40–50%. Not 10%. If your build weeks were 500 TSS, the recovery week is nearer 250–300. Enough of a drop that ATL falls sharply and TSB climbs back toward positive.
- Cut volume, keep a little intensity. A couple of short, sharp efforts keep the top end awake; the rest is easy. You're shedding fatigue, not fitness — a week this light barely dents CTL but clears ATL almost completely.
- Let form come back up. By the end of the week TSB should be near or above zero. That rebound is the adaptation surfacing — you typically start the next block measurably stronger, not just rested.
Why do people skip it? Because skipping it feels stronger. Your CTL keeps climbing, the chart looks relentless, and stopping feels like losing ground. It's the opposite. Skip enough recovery weeks and you don't get a fitter rider — you get a tired one whose CTL is high and whose form is permanently in the basement, unable to do a single session justice. The riders who plateau in March almost always plateaued because they never took the week that would have let February's work land.
A tell you can watch for
If your heart rate at a given power keeps drifting up week over week, your easy days don't feel easy anymore, or your sharp sessions are all coming in under target — you're overdue a recovery week, whatever the calendar says. Deterministic load models flag this as a TSB that won't climb back out of a deep negative. The chart is telling you to take the week. Take it.
Peak and taper: turning fitness into form
Once base and build have taken CTL where it needs to be, the last few weeks change job entirely. Peak holds CTL roughly flat while the intensity gets specific to your event — the exact demands of your race, granfondo, or big ride, rehearsed. You're not building fitness anymore; you're pointing it. Taper then trades a small, deliberate amount of CTL for a large amount of freshness: cut volume 40–60% over one to three weeks, keep a little intensity so you don't go stale, and let TSB rise into a positive band — roughly +5 to +25 on the day, depending on the event and the rider. You lose a couple of CTL points; you gain access to all of it. That trade is almost always worth it, and it's a big enough topic to be its own article — the "peak on the day" thread of this journal.
What it looks like end to end
Here's an illustrative 18-week run from a mid-fitness base to an event, in 3:1 blocks. The numbers are a teaching model — rounded, not pulled from real files like the Gran Diagonal case study — but the shape is exactly what a good plan does. Watch the recovery weeks (highlighted): every one dips CTL slightly and lets ramp reset before the next push.

Read the CTL column top to bottom and the logic is visible: it climbs in threes, steps back in the recovery week, then climbs again from a body that absorbed the last block. It tops out around week 15, then the taper trades three or four points of CTL for the freshness that turns 80 points of fitness into a result on event day. No week is random. Every one is a move.
The uncomfortable part
None of this is complicated. The maths is a multiplication and some patience. What's hard is the discipline it demands: to ride easy when your legs are fresh and want to go, to take the recovery week when your CTL is climbing and stopping feels like quitting, and to trust a number over a mood on the days they disagree. The chart doesn't care how good your legs feel today — it cares whether you'll be able to express them in twelve weeks. Self-coaching isn't a lack of a plan. It's being your own plan, and then actually following it.
